Edinburgh, quite simply, is a
brilliant destination. The venue itself is the
superb Edinburgh International Conference
Centre located along with the conference
hotels in the heart of the city centre, close to
many restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops.
Edinburgh is unforgettable.
Every guide book tells you so and every visiting
commentator or traveller leaves in no doubt that
this is one of the world's great cities.
History towers above the Conference Centre. The
castle clings to its rock as the historic
buildings of the old town ramble down the spine
of the Royal Mile to the splendid Palace of
Holyrood House. Across the green expanse of the
Princes Street Gardens lies the elegant Georgian
New Town, waiting to be explored.
Amidst these gracious
surroundings, Edinburgh is alive with
inspiration and innovation. This is the city of
arts and sciences, home to theatres, concert
halls and art collections, museums and
institutions of international significance.
This year's symposium provides
activities you can find only in historic
Scotland. We have an outstanding technical
program planned, social events everyone is
looking forward to and great exhibitions.
The symposium starts with an
optional field trip on Saturday, May 24th,
visiting geological formations near Edinburgh
which are analogues for hydrocarbon bearing
formations found beneath the North Sea. The
objective is to directly observe outcrops as an
aid to interpretation of the equivalent
electrical log data. The field trip leader is
Dr. Mark J.F. Lawrence, Senior Geologist at
Baker Atlas GeoScience.
On the Sunday we are offering
four all day short courses presented by the
leaders in their respective fields. 1 - Core
Analysis by Colin McPhee of Senergy. 2 -
Practical NMR Interpretation by Dr. Paul Basan
of RPS Energy. 3 - Reservoir Geomechanics for
Petrophysicists by Dr. Abbas Khaksar of Helix
RDS. 4 - Well Testing by Prof. Shiyi Zheng, of
Heriot-Watt University.
Scotland has a reputation for
being the home of golf. Weatherford will be
sponsoring the Golf Tournament at Gullane, which
been used for Open Championship Qualifying.
Schlumberger will host the
traditional Icebreaker on Sunday evening at an
exclusive event at Edinburgh Castle itself.
This overlooks the historic old town and is a
fabulous place to chat with old friends, find
new ones and view a Scottish sunset.
On Monday, the Keynote Address by
Mr. Brian Adam, Member of the Scottish
Parliament and Co-convenor of the Cross Party Group
for Oil and Gas, will kick off the technical program
of three days of presentations and poster sessions
on the most recent technologies. The Exhibition
also starts on Monday with more than 30
companies participating.
In the evening, Baker Hughes will
sponsor a 'Night at Dynamic Earth'. Dynamic
Earth is the Mother Earth of all adventures,
taking you on a journey of discovery, in around
and across our planet. You'll travel back in
time to witness the Big Bang be shaken by
erupting volcanoes, fly over glaciers, dive into
the oceans, and even get caught in a tropical
rainstorm! On Tuesday evening, Halliburton will
sponsor a social event at the famous Edinburgh
Le Monde Club.
We have planned three spouse's
trips. Monday's trip will be to Rosslyn Chapel,
of Da Vinci Code fame and includes lunch at
Roslin Glen Hotel. On Tuesday spouses can visit
the Royal Yacht Britannia, chic lunch at the
Malmaison Hotel, finishing up with a visit to
Holyrood House. Wednesday's excursion with be
to the Falkirk Wheel and the Antonine Wall, the
spectacular centrepiece of the Forth -Clyde and
Union canals. Lunch will be at the Orroco Pier
Hotel with its breathtaking views over the Firth
of Forth including the famous Forth Rail Bridge.
With 50 oral presentations and 35
posters chosen from nearly 300 submitted
abstracts we can guarantee a great technical
program. Please visit these pages for details
of the technical program, field trip, short
courses and social activities.
We hope to see you in Edinburgh!!
