Gullane
is a delightful village and one of ScotlandÂ’s
greatest golf centers (Muirfield is 1km to the
northeast). Golf has been played on Gullane Hill for
over 300 years. Founded in 1882, the Gullane Golf
Club boasts 3 superb links courses with dramatic
views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh and
Fife. The Courses do not have names but simply
numbers which reflect their age. Established in
1884, the No.1 course can be a severe test of golf
and is frequently used as a qualifying course for
the Open Championship. The No.2 course was completed
in 1898 and has also been used for Open Championship
Qualifying as well as the Seniors Open Amateur. The
first seven holes run alongside the No.1 course
before sweeping down towards the bay and turning
back to the clubhouse. With smaller greens and
narrower fairways, the shorter No.3 course is a real
test of accurate shotmaking.
The SPWLA outing will be played on the No.2 course
which poses an interesting challenge for the scratch
golfer without being too severe a test for less
accomplished golfers. Visitors to Gullane are given
a warm welcome at the visitors' Clubhouse where they
are free to use all of the clubs Facilities. There
are a driving range, short game and putting practice
areas available before you play. Lockers, changing
rooms and bar & catering are all available to
refresh you before and after your round. Club hire
and caddies are available at reasonable rates by
advance booking. Golf carts (buggies) are not
generally available.
Visitors are requested to wear golf shoes with soft
spikes. Gullane's Courses have a good reputation for
quick play and you are encouraged to keep up with
the group in front or let faster groups play
through. Rounds taking longer than four hours are
considered excessive.
For the geologically mindedÂ… Gullane Hill consists
of Carboniferous sediments with volcanic dolerite
sill intrusions. Its northern, western and
south-eastern flanks have been covered by blown
sand.. From the summit, 200 feet above sea level,
there are excellent views of the distinctive
volcanic hills of Bass Rock and North Berwick Law
and the high costal dune ridge bordering Gullane
Beach. Nearby Muirfield is built upon a series of
old dune ridges.
